🇨🇦 Canada’s economy grew faster than anticipated! Statistics Canada reported a tiny, yet mighty 0.6% growth in GDP in January. This is the fastest growth since last year with most of the growth accounting for the growth in education services. Probably, because January is a start for many university and college programs, after all, Canada is expected to issue 360,000 study permits this year! (StatsCan)

👩🏻‍🎓 Speaking of international students - Canada has reduced the number of study permits to be issued in 2024 by 35%. This comes in the midst of tightening financial requirements for students, reducing the allowed hours to work to 20 hr/w and changes to PGWP eligibility (Arrive)

😳 Some experts worry that the cap on international students will, in fact, create a ripple effect, with more layoffs affecting the education services - which ironically has just experienced a hiring lift (CBC)

💰 Want to know how much government employees are making? Ontario released the “Sunshine List” - a rank of the public employees who are making the biggest annual salary. An Executive of Ontario Power Generation Ken Hartwick tops the list with $1.9M in annual compensation.(Sunshine List)

🎩 Career Tips

The best of us don’t even need to build a resume, and our reputation speaks for ourselves. However, as a newcomer to Canada, you have to build that reputation and network from scratch.

Crafting a compelling Elevator Pitch is critical to communicating who you are and your value to the employer and your network.

How to Craft an Elevator Pitch:

  1. Start with Impact: Begin your pitch with a compelling statement that grabs attention and conveys your unique value proposition immediately. For example, "I help small businesses transform their digital marketing strategy with minimal budgets."

  2. Keep it Concise: Aim for a pitch that can be delivered in 30 seconds or less. Focus on the most crucial aspects of who you are, what you do, and why it matters.

  3. Tell a Story: Incorporate a brief anecdote or story that illustrates your expertise or passion. Everyone loves a bit of humour and it helps create a memorable connection with your audience.

  4. Highlight Results: Emphasize tangible results or achievements to showcase your capabilities. For instance, "I launched a new product in just 3 months by helping the team leverage AI"

  5. Use Power Words: Use strong and impactful words that convey confidence and enthusiasm. Avoid jargon and focus on language that resonates with your audience.

  6. Know Your Audience: Tailor your pitch to the specific needs and interests of your listener. Research their background and objectives to customize your message effectively.

  7. Practice and Refine: Practice your elevator pitch regularly to ensure it flows smoothly and naturally. Solicit feedback from peers or mentors to refine and improve your delivery.

  8. Be Authentic: Infuse your personality into the pitch to make it genuine and memorable. Authenticity builds trust and credibility with your audience.
