🤫 Job search tips from a recent newcomer
We get dozens of messages from newcomers who share their job search and immigration stories. Last week, we’ve received a thoughtful message from a Data Scientist who landed a job within a month after arriving in Canada - without any references.
What did he do?
“It was a combination of 3 things for me..” - @muksgce
Demonstrating knowledge.
He didn’t just list his responsibilities and skills. He demonstrated how he applied his skills in his previous experiences.
Instead of listing a skill like Python or SQL or Tableau, he described projects and situations in which he leveraged each skill to achieve a measurable result for his team and company.
Preparing for interview rigorously.
He was ready to defend every skill and bullet point listed on his resume with thoughtful and relevant stories. Depending on the company he interviewed at, he tailored his examples and stories to make it super relevant for that specific industry, company focus and person.
He was prepared to answer follow up questions to dig deep into nitty gritty of his past projects. He avoided general high level descriptions, and dove deep into specifics during the interview.
Active listening during the interview
He prioritized fostering a meaningful conversation with the interviewer, avoiding transactional and close-ended questions and answers.
Example:
Instead of asking “do you like working here?”, he asked “What is it like working here?”
He used a mix of professional and semi-casual tone to build rapport with the interviewer
He also highlighted that this was the hardest part of the interview, since it takes time to practice and get good at.
He also shared a pro tip:
In short - he thoughtfully tailored his resume and sought to highlight the skills and experiences he saw were the most important to the employer based on the job description.
