⛵️ There are more jobs than you think

Most newcomers to Canada the most natural inclination is to over emphasize large, known companies, and for good reason. These employers often offer stability, structured career paths, and competitive benefits—elements that provide a sense of security while settling into a new country.

The issue is - everybody wants to work for these companies, and that’s essentially what not just every newcomer does, but also many Canadians gravitate towards.

Our goal is to optimize for your chance of success, and unfortunately, applying for large, known companies does not always present the best chances.

Here’s what we recommend instead:

Tech Startups

Startups are small and young companies, usually in technology space. They offer a dynamic and fast-paced environment, and as a result - a lot of opportunity to learn fast.

You’ll likely be closely involved in projects, have a direct impact, and experience rapid skill growth. Startups can be especially rewarding for those looking to innovate, make decisions quickly, and work in a flexible environment.

Startups tend to struggle with hiring, because they are known to be less stable, they may lack the benefits and job security offered by larger companies. Roles are often less defined, which can mean longer hours and less predictability in work-life balance.

What if I’m not in technology or engineering? - you might ask.

Great news! Many tech startups operate at the intersection of different industries, often aiming to disrupt certain industries. To disrupt well and smart, they often look to hire SMEs (subject matter experts) in the specific field.

Are you a Logistics Specialist? Consider exploring roles at a Logistics Software startup

Are you a Mechanical Engineer? Consider roles at an IoT or robotics startup.

Are in Finance? Consider roles in financial technology companies.

Small-Sized Companies

A small-sized company is the company you probably never heard of. It could be your local clinic, or a small local logistics company or a regional manufacturer of flag poles. Since it’s the company you probably never heard of - guess what - these companies often struggle hiring great people, because most people just flock to large companies. This is your advantage as a newcomer - seek out smaller, lesser known companies.

Small companies offer close-knit team environments and opportunities to work across departments. If you’re a newcomer, these environments are great to build good relationships and learn about different aspects of doing business in Canada.

Are you a structural engineer but always wanted more experience in project coordination or estimation? Easy - since smaller sized companies have less budget to hire various experienced specialists, they will be glad if you try yourself in different responsibilities, if you can handle additional work load. These companies often value versatility and personal growth.

You may have a greater say in decision-making and find a strong sense of support. There are less people to go through to carry your ideas forward and since you will be one of the few OG employees. Your voice will matter more once the company grows and hires newbies. And by that time you can have a team lead role.

Small-sized companies strive to grow, so they attend conferences to build network and gain more clients; this means you can be a part of this journey and build you own network too.

The downside of smaller companies is that resources may be limited. This can impact your benefits, training opportunities. Upward mobility can be limited too - after all, if the team is small, there are only so many managers the company needs.
